Max' arrival in England: | 1) | Name: MAX HEINZ NATHAN Home address: BERLIN Date of birth: 5.5.20 Arrival date in Britain: 9th March, 1939 English address: Richborough Camp Profession: Pipe Layer 26th March, 1941 165 Company, Pioneer Corps, Army No. 13802049 Address in April, 1944 29 Louis Street, Leeds 7 Address in June, 1945 14 Lanark Mansions, Lanark Road, London, W.9. Your father did not come to Britain with the children’s transport (he was too old, as you rightly say) but there is no indication on the registration slip as to which kind of entry permit he arrived with. That he gave as his profession ‘pipe layer’ may be an indication as to how he was able to enter this country: if pipe-laying was an under-subscribed occupation the authorities were more likely to issue an entry permit than if he had claimed to have an already over-filled profession. He appears to have lived at the Richborough Camp for the year between the time he arrived in England until he joined the army. This camp was a place of temporary refuge for about 5,000 men and is well-described in a book, ‘They Found Refuge’ by Norman Bentwich. This book is now out of print so I am photocopying the relevant pages and sending them to you by post. |
